WITH CAROL ROARK
Where are you painting from and what have you been doing to keep busy?
I am painting in and around the north Mississippi Delta area. I paint a lot of plein air in very rural locations, so luckily I have been able to continue through the pandemic. I am also the director of a local arts council and so I also stay busy thinking of “out of the box” ways to bring the arts to our community during the quarantine (lots of Facebook Live classes).
How did you find inspiration from your surroundings for it?
Like most of my work, the inspiration for my piece comes from a nearby location in the lovely Mississippi Delta. The Mississippi Delta landscape is unfamiliar to most who are not from the south and overlooked for its beauty by many of the people who live here. I hope my painting brings attention to the beauty of this unique part of the country.
What is one positive that has come from this experience for you?
During the quarantine, especially when we were sheltering in place, I have had much more time to focus on painting. It has also made me aware of how beneficial art is to our mental health. As an art instructor, I now want to reach even more people and help them get in touch with their own creativity.
What is one of your favorite pieces in the collection from a fellow artist?
